Who I Aim To Help

  1. Less likely to take a literal approach to viewing the scriptures]

  2. Highly likely to research information on Church History from sources other than official Church resources

  3. More likely to support of questioning traditional assumptions

  4. Less likely to accept propositions on the basis of being said by a prophet without supporting justification

  5. More likely to include studying non-Church resources for spiritual fulfillment

  6. Labeled as “Spiritually Independent” by the Church statistics and research department

What to Avoid in Discourse to Maintain Trust

  1. Setting up fences on where to research and who to discuss it with

  2. Appeals to Authority - “a logical fallacy that occurs when someone accepts a claim as true because an authority figure says it is”

  3. Appeals to Tradition - “Appeal to tradition is a claim in which a thesis is deemed correct on the basis of correlation with past or present tradition”

  4. Epistemological Schizophrenia [switching from “It is true because of its observable effects on the human condition” and “I know it is true because I feel it is” when it is convenient for the argument]

  5. Casual dismissals of personal experiences

  6. Calling people who leave the body of the saints due to questions no one could answer, intellectually lazy or morally deficient

  1. Loss of trust in the institution to disclose historical narratives

  2. Book of Mormon historicity and truth claims

  3. No official institutional practices to address questions

  4. Failure to be integrated into the community

The Liberals/Libertarians:

  1. Church doctrine

  2. Lack of a Church environment where their personality traits could be utilized

  3. Did not find institutional worship services intellectually engaging

  4. Loss of trust in institution/higher leadership to help foster spiritual closeness with Christ

  5. Unable to relate to top leadership
